Sometimes small encounters set you off on big journeys. In this case it was my encounter with a strange fish on a New Zealand beach, as well as an encounter with a strange old Dutch comic titled Bulletje en Bonestaak, a series that ran from 1922 to 1937, in black and white, and whose character style inspired me. A particular drawing of a sailor grabbed my attention, which I reinterpreted and recreated (see right), and then introduced to the strange watery world of lampreys. I like to entangle unlikely worlds.

This book was run as a small self-published limited edition in Dunedin, New Zealand in 2017, and paintings were exhibited at Geoff’s Studio.

The book is waiting for its re-introduction into the world.
